PC running SOOOOOO slow

I'm a bit of a lurker in these forums but I'm now in a serious, desperate need of help.

My PC is running at such a rubbish speed lately it's unreal. If my wife logs out of my XP profile/account into hers it can sometimes take over an hour. Using the internet sometimes takes longer. The only way to do anything is by restarting all the time. I have also been getting LOADS of the same type of popups appearing within IE when using it, even though I an running popupcop AN google toolbar.

I need help, this is getting me down and I can't format (again) I also have LOADS of work I need to finish.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

I'll give you as much info as I possibally can....

I have a Pentium 4 1.8GHz machine, 40 Gb HDD partitioned into 3 seperate drives.

WinXP - 13.33Gb 498Mb free
Store 1 - 20.12Gb 12.33Gb free
Store 2 - 3.81Gb 331Mb free

Ram: 256 Ram

Video card : Nvidia Geforce2 MX 400

Res: 1280x1024 with 16bit colour depth

holy......is that when ur machine is idle? My win 2k runs down to about 24 or less processes when idle - and that includes various bits of seti cruching software. It might be an idea to got through and remove some of those processes u dont use - free ur ram and cpu up a bit.

EDIT - Zone alarm, mcaffee and norton? do u really need 3 firewalls/virus scanners?
 
You run at least 3 different AntiVirus softwares, Grisoft's AVG, Norton and McAfee (and I also found some Panda AV-stuff). You need only one of them.
AVG is free and good enough for everyday use. For someone like you, I suggest to uninstall AVG and Norton AV, and stick with McAfee.
Your PC needs desperate cleaning. Uninstall also the Norton utilities completely. They HOG resources and you don't need them.

Furthermore, you have only about 4% free on your C-drive, that is sheer madness.

Looks like you have downloaded and installed every bit of junk you could get your hands on, sorry to say this.

I could make a list of what you should uninstall, but I can't be bothered really.
My advice: format c: /u and start from scratch.
Then stop installing junk.
 
I don't run three virus scanners. Well not usually :p

What I use is Zone Alarm as a firewall and AVG as virus. I just installed Mcaffee trial yesterday to test if AVG was actually doing it's job. I did have Panda stuff installed a while back but it shouldn't be on there now and the nortons is just the system utilites not the virus scan or firewall.

also I have some crap on the PC but DON'T know how to get rid of them. Info on this would be helpful.
 
Right new read out and I have deleted loads of stuff to free up C: space.

-add/remove programs
uninstall everything except avg and zonealarm- including mcafee and norton imo- that you havent used in the last couple months.
restart
-go to run
-type msconfig
-click startup tab and uncheck all the boxes that relate to the crap you never use/dont need
restart
download Spybot or Adaware (or both as you seem to like free software) run them
-open explorer- tools-internet options-general tab-delete cookies and temporary internet files
-defrag your hd.
-and from now on only dowload and use utilities recommended by the smart folks here at TS- its what I do.
 
Check with Task Manager if there are apps using 100% CPU time (in normal or higher priority), it could explain the slowness.
 
i see that you are using a memory optimizer program or something. i don't suggest using those types of programs because although they "free up" ram, they make most of the programs that are present in ram be used in the swap file on the hard drive. the swap file is a whole lot slower than ram so that is not a good idea. installing more memory would be better for your situation.

but first uninstall all the stuff you don't need because they just make your computer slower by taking up hard drive space and sucking up resources. i almost fainted when i saw your hijackthis list! :eek:

i have around 30 processes at idle on windows xp. with win2k, i have around 25 processes. try to limit the number of programs loading on startup in the tray icon and such. keep it to things you actually use.

here are some anti-spyware programs:

Spybot - Search & Destroy

Lavasoft Ad-aware

Also, get rid of Flashget, Bitspirit and DAP downloaders. These include spyware. Instead, download the (Free!) advert-free, spyware-free Stardownloader from www.stardownloader.com.

I see you have Messenger and MessengerPlus. One of those should do, uninstall the other.

As you have Diskeeper, uninstall Norton Speedisk (or better even, all of the Norton Utilities).

Like BrownPaper suggested, get rid of the memory-optimiser.

Uninstall IEbooster. If you like IE, D/L and install the (Free!) advert-/spyware-free Avant Browser from www.avantbrowser.com
This includes a program Robocop, DON'T install that when asked.
When you use Avant, you can also uninstall PopUpCop, as Avant blocks popups as well.

That should keep you busy for a while.
 
You Know what.... With All that crap on your computer and you have spyware that you can't remove I suggest you just reformat your hard drive. Wipe everything off of it and start fresh... you will definitly see an improvement in the computers speeds. I know thats what I did to mine and now it works fine :bounce: . Especially Since it Takes an Hour (Unless that was an exaggeration). But yeah do that.
 
Agreed with above there is too many things you will have to do and there will be a minimal effect. Oh for next time free up space on your C drive DL or move things to other partitions or separate drives this way windows wont have to look through all the junk to find the neccesary files to run it.

If you dont go that route DL microsoft anti spyware beta along with the lavasoft program run both and see what they come up with.

There is also this program called crap cleaner its www.ccleaner.com that erases all the temp files and junk stored in your computer that slows it down. Try running that as well plus it will free up some space in your hard drive.

If you have windows XP you should not be runining more than 40 system processes anything over is waayyy too much but if i were you i would just reformat everything and start fresh. :bounce:
