I'm considering upgrading my old XP 2400+ to something a little more up to date. I'm looking at a AMD Athlon 64 3700+, Socket 754. Is there any noticeable performance differerence between the 939 and 754? By the time I upgrade again I'll probably have to buy a different socket mobo/cpu anyway. Cheers.

If the chipsets are similair (ala NF3 and NF4) and you have the same components otherwise, there is virtually no performance difference between like-chips of the two sockets. Note, however, that with 754, there are chips that are branded the same but have different clockspeeds, due to one having more L2 cache than the other.

Also note, however, that the 754 socket is not a viable upgrade path. If you plan on upgrading to a beefier CPU in the future, stick with 939.
