Performance tuning of Windows Systems

I'm going to step my foot into it with this topic. First you should understand there are several ways to improve the performance of any system and it isn't pure science but more of an art that's acquired by practice.

Secondly, performance is always relative to a specific environment. What you do to improve one system may not work so well on another.

That said, a performance standard mantra is: "nothing is faster than doing nothing" - - meaning eliminating work is always a positive step.

Here's the TOC for the attached PDF

Just to be clear - -
  • I do use Heterogeneous Print/File sharing {Windows, Mac, Linux}
  • I do NOT use peer-peer services at all
  • Neither do I need Media Server (Sharing allows viewing & playing media on other systems)
  • I disallow all forms of Remote Desktop for security reasons
and that explains WHY I can run without so many MS services.

As I am writing this, I have only 74 active processes, including my email Thunderbird and Firefox Browser (4x procs)
