Gamers that might not have the means or desire to make payments online through Steam can now pick up prepaid cards at their local GameStop. The cards, known as “Steam Wallet” are available in $20 and $50 denominations and should be available at all locations across the US as of writing.

Valve director of business development Jason Holtman commented on the news, saying that Steam Wallet cards at GameStop provide extended options and convenience to gamers around the world. Echoing those sentiments, GameStop’s Steve Nix said the new service will allow gamers to put money into their Steam Wallet using cash, gift cards or trade credits. GameStop PowerUp Rewards members will additionally be able to accrue points for making Steam credit purchases.

The cards work like any other gift card in that there is a printed code on the back of the card that can be redeemed on Steam. In addition to providing those without a PayPal account or credit card a means to purchase content on Steam, the cards would also make great gifts from non-gamers.

News of the Steam Wallet cards first hit the web last week where it was described as a “bitter sweet” deal between the two companies since it’s not an ideal way for either to sell games. But it does have advantages for both companies as Valve is able to make sales to those who might not otherwise shop with them while GameStop is able to sell a product that would otherwise skip the middleman.

as a steam user not in the US, I hope they also do this in other parts of the world. Highly unlikely, but one can hope.

If only Android would follow Apple and Steam's lead and offer gift cards for the Google Play store.

Finally, I can feel safe to make purchases without my credit card info. Thanks Steam, Valve, and Gamestop :D
