Printing problems with Win 8.1

I'm not sure what happened recently but my HP Deskjet is no longer printing. The usb port is not being recognized. I've tried a new cable, same result. I know the ports are working because they work with other devices. So I bought a new Deskjet, same problem. I'm now wondering if one of the MS updates has caused this problem. Any ideas?

8.1 is an old OS so Microsoft updates aren't a likely cause. Have you completely uninstalled the HP printer drivers and software then carefully followed the manufacturers instructions to set up the printer afresh?

Actually, it is an update problem. After I installed today's update, my printer is once again working.

Thanks for posting back about how you solved this. I never took to 8.1 and used third party software to modify it until I did the free upgrade to W10.
