Problem with my ATI Radeon x1800xt

I had a problem with my x1800xt on startup while running diagnostics on my motherboard and Graphics card. On startup..after POST is initiated and the text is displayed on-screen with system details, the color is all disoriented and the font size is bigger than usual. Now the technician said it was most likely the graphics card was defective. I am objective to his conclusion as i believe it may be an issue with the card drivers and if started in windows and configured properly with the neccessary catalyst drivers, it would work. Do you think this should work?
