Problem with Windows XP Task Manager

I have a problem with Task Manager on my laptop. If I have a bunch of applications running, and I open task manager and "switch to" a specified task, it does nothing. It only switches to it if the task was minimized to begin with. I don't see this behavior on any of my other computers. Is there a configuration setting or something I'm missing? Thanks.
