Problems loading certain websites

i have a hp compaq 6710b laptop
that i bought used, it has windows xp pro
i am having problems going to certain websites
(like myspace.com and google.com plus many others
i am kinda of a newbie so please excuse my ignorance
can anyone help this damsel in distress
