my mate is wanting to overclok his CPU afer he found it has great overcloking potential as yu all know. I told him the simplest way is to go into the bios an jack up the FSB bit by bit till you get a stable setting. Which he did but the highest he can get it is up to 230 (2.3ghz) becasue if he goes any higher his com makes a weird noise (its dead quiet though, ) and the bios says "Overcloking failed " and put him into to bios to put the fsb back down. We know the processor can go higher than that, any ideas how to stop it givein us this message?

his specs are

AMD 64 3000+ CPU
ASUS K8N mobo
512MBRAM
radeon 9800

You need to lower the htt multi, if you haven't already done so. It can be called many things(it's not the cpu multi), it'll have settings of /4x/3x/2x/1x, choose 3x until you get to 266, then 2x. Ocing to 230 would make your htt bus(230 x 4 =920) overclocked, and it's not supposed to go over 800 for a skt. 754. Also, you could bump up the vcore a notch or two(like 1.5v) to help stability. Also, does he have oc'ing ram? If he just has pc3200 he may need to set a memory divider, like a 5:6 divider, sometimes it's listed like normal is 200mhz, a 5:6 would be setting the memory to 166(166/200 is ~5:6).
