Problems with Repairing XP

  1. Recently my DELL computer reported a problem with Windows XP. It says that I can try to repair this problem using the original disc and hitting R at the first screen. I don't know much about computers and I have been seeking help for this everywhere. When I click to repair the problem, it asks me to log on to the c:\\WINDOWS>, but I don't know where to go from there, such as which commands will help me to repair it. Is it best to use the recovery console or to take a different route and if so, what route do I take? I would appreciate it if anyone could offer any instructions on how to solve this problem and still maintain as many original files as I possibly can. Thank you!
