I have a fairly new laptop, and i have 2GB of ram on it. The weird thing is when ever i check how much memory i use( in the task manager), its always above 1GB, even when the computer is doing absolutely nothing!!..is that normal??

I am running windows vista and i have checked for virus's

Please help

P.S- i was wondering could it be that my anti virus software is using the memory in the back ground???

Vista, Lovable Maybe.... Quirky, Definitely........

When Vista is installed, there is a function called "Superfetch". What this does is load programs into memory that it thinks you're going to use. As a Consequence, static memory load will always be much higher than with XP.

There is a bright side however. Should you want to run a program other than the one Vista thinks you're going to, Vista will release the memory for that application.

AV programs are more CPU intensive than memory intensive, so the moral here is, some of them will slow down your machine a bunch, they just won't use all your memory to do it.
