Using different memory brands and speeds have a greater chance at causing problems. It is always recommended to use the same brand and speed modules for compatibility purposes. If you choose to mismatch your memory modules, I'm fairly certain you will do so on your own. I highly doubt anyone will step in and give a good word about mismatching memory.

If you seriously have need in 16GB memory, get a matching set. I have 8GB in my machine and hardly ever see usage over 4GB. If I was to need more memory for some specialized reason, I'd make certain it was a matching set.
