Random crashes (no BSOD)

Hey, you guys on TechSpot were very helpful with solving malware problems with my laptop. Now I'm looking to fix issues on my housemate's laptop.

Now, from what I've experienced, I'm not entirely sure what the problem is, or what the source of the problem is. The computer just seems to crash (i.e. shut itself down) at random times, with no error or other messages. However, when you turn the computer back on, Windows does acknowledge that the computer was not shut down properly, offers safemode etc.

She is running Windows Vista.

What is my starting point?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like the laptop is overheating check that there is no dust in the fan and check that the CPU is not overheating.
