my brother is having problems with his xp computer. he let mcfee do a virus scan and told it to shut down if there was no viruses. It did but when he started it up there was an account to login which had never been there before.

titled "Josh" with an password protection. The surrounding screen was black. not the usual menu for loging on to xp.
any ideas?

It is not uncommon for your startup screens to change after a major scan, if some infestations were removed. But there are infestations as well, and one of those will do what you are reporting.
First thing to do is download to a Flash Drive or CD, AVAST or AVira, SuperAntiSpyware, and Malware Bytes.
Be prepared to install them in <SAFE MODE> then boot to <SAFE MODE> by depressing the <F8> key repeatedly when you first depress the <ON> button.
If it will boot, which is not yet known, you will get a very low resolution screen that is difficult to read. But you can get to a place where you may be able to install the spyware removal tools you just downloaded.
Try installing then running these programs one at a time... then remove every evil they find.
If they will run, your problem is partially solved.
When you reboot from a cold boot, your bad "Josh" screen may be gone.
If not, come back for step two.
