I have an 80G HD and plan to make a C: drive with 10G for XP and 70G D:
for my programs and saved items. Question - if I have to reinstall XP for whatever reason do I have to reinstall the programs? Thanks.

Absolutely

Most programs add keys to the Windows registry or edit existing keys. When you uninstall Windows, you remove the registry and all information associated with the programs. Hope this answers your question.

If you re-install OVER your existing XP (which is an update-in-place), you don't need to reinstall your programs.
However, if you install XP on a different partition/disk from before, THEN you MUST re-install everything.

So it is really best to have a backup to second hd with something like Norton's Ghost?
