Reloading Windows O/S with 0'd out FTDI chip

My son had his legit FTDI chip 0'd out by the last windows update. We thought it was a hard drive issue before we found a thread talking about how to fix and all the real chips that were affected. We tried to reload the hard drive and it will not load because of the 0'd out chip I presume. In order to fix it we need a working O/S. Any suggestions on how to get the O/S back on or if there is a way to run the O/S off a USB key? Any help would be greatly appericiated.
