In the lead up to the launch of the new iPhone, Apple has reportedly placed its largest order yet for next-generation models: 70-80 million units by December 30th of this year. In contrast, Apple ordered 50-60 million units for the launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c.

There are several reasons as to why Apple has made such a large order of new iPhones. One is that they're expecting record demand for the upcoming phones, which are expected to be available as 4.7- and 5.5-inch models. The larger displays will close the hardware gap between the iPhone and other flagship smartphones, meaning demand will likely increase compared to previous launches.

The increase in orders could also be attributed to Apple's recent partnership with China Mobile, the largest wireless carrier in the world. The launch of the upcoming iPhone could be the first where Chinese buyers can order the smartphone at the same time as other nations, increasing global demand.

Either way, the launch of the next-generation iPhone is going to be a big one. Aside from larger displays, the new iPhones are widely expected to include tougher synthetic-sapphire glass, a better camera, and the usual selection of performance improvements.

But I didn't think Apple needed anything larger than 3.5"?
As much as people want to say Samsung started the whole phablet thing, you gotta give credit, where credit is due. I bought a Dell Streak, when it first came out. Even thought it only had 1.6, once 2.2 was released, it wasn't that bad. It's failure in part, was it was tied to at&t, and they never marketed it, preferring to promote nothing but the iphone, for obvious reasons. Once Samsung came out with the Note1, the whole phablet thing kind of took off.

Really apple stoop that low that to increase sales they have to buy there own phones... thats low apple thats low...

LOOOL I dunno about you guys but I find it funny apple has to order there own phones ;)
Apple: I would like to purchase an iphone please.
Apple: Sure thing what phone would you like.
Apple: the new next gen iphone.
Apple: ok that would be $$$$$$$$$$$
Apple: Thanks, great customer service by the way.
Apple now moves away from the mirror, the end.

I don't care. I was done with apple five years ago. They are worse company I have ever worked with.

One thing might happen, accessory makers might rejoice. New designs could mean more dollars coming in.

Actually, it could be quite the opposite. More form factors means more R&D, more materials, and more machinery to make the accessories. One item that sells millions is a bigger profit maker than 3 items that sell hundreds of thousands.

70-80 mill? Maybe Apple thinks idiocy is contagious and you know what? They could be right. Fortunately I'm immune to them, I've had my vaccine in the form of their corporate greed.

Really looking forward to the new iPhone AS LONG AS it stays $200 on contract. If the rumors of it being $350 are true, I will flip a table.

Are you having a stroke?
It means Apple has ordered the MANUFACTURING of 70 to 80 million units from OEMs, like Foxconn. Not that they purchased their own phones.

4.7inch screen with 4x the pixels of their existing one? 1280 x 2272 at 4.7inch makes it 554 PPI. Doable.
