    Hi,

I have a rootkit in the system and I understand that the best way, certainly the easiest way to go back to normal is to save whatever I need and reformat the hard drive, I have already saved music files etc on a clean machine and I have used a rescue disc on my computer hoping that that would get rid of the rootkit, it hasn't.
the xp os came preinstalled on the computer, however I have now been offered an xp sp2 disc and my question is will that disc work on my computer? I heard that microsoft had done something to the software to stop, as they call it soft piracy

    Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Before resorting to using an illegal copy of Windows, Which by the way isn`t a good idea, go HERE and follow the instructions. It might just help you to get rid of the rootkit.

If it doesn`t, then I recommend you buy a legit copy of Windows and reformat.

Techspot does not and cannot condone the use of pirated software.
