    Perhaps if this cost could have been passed on to consumers, things may have stayed as they were. So it is more of an economic decision as pointed out by Rick. In a way it is good to have multiple options, may be such defections also make Google re-think its strategies as well.

    Really cool concept (the 3D maps). ...Until your wireless provider slaps you with the overage fees on your data plan should you use this away from a wifi hotspot.

    Need more information to see how much large textures are or whether there is no heavy data usage in the system similar to the Google Maps "tile" image system. They do point out that the ipad is "rendering" the 3d objects. Might not be exact textures of buildings but from a set of standard materials that could be installed. It's unlikely but it could even use less data than Google Maps.
