Sata hdd w/ ide to sata bridge not being recognized

recently purchased a western digital 400 gb sata hd and am using a ide to sata bridge to connect it to the ide cable from an external 3.5" enclosure. when everything is connected the usb port that the external hd is connected to only shows the ide to sata bridge driver. i only want the sata drive to function as an external drive for storage. am i missing something that i need to do to get this recognized in my computer in xp?

This Western Digital 400 needs to be formatted. Use the Western Digital install program to set up the new drive... You may have to temporarily install the drive into your computer to do the formatting
