hi,
i have an older system and since my graphic card died I have bought an old radeon 9800 pro card.

I am using normally linux where I had no problems with the 9800.
Then I have tried to install windows which ended always in a frozen black screen after the winlogo when I installed the drivers, but works on vga mode.

So i tried different drivers but none has worked.

Then I tried to use 3d games in linux to check if the card is ok.
It crashes also in linux when I open a 3d application.
The glxgears command which shows 3 3d gears and shows the fps works in a small window but crashes in a bigger window.

So is it possible that the 3d acceleration is somehow defect but works with 2d and small 3d windows ?

or is it a overheating problem ?

Or is it the PSU, which is also a new one with 350 W.

Thanks,
andro

"old radeon 9800 pro card"...

Try another video card... What version Windows are you trying to use?

well the computer is working fine with a nvidia card (5200fx).
I have tried both xp and vista.

I think the problem is somehow the graphic card dies when you use some 3d features.

In linux on a small window the command glxgears (3 gears turning) works, but when I make the window larger, the computer freezes.

May be it is some kind of heating problem, but the fan works fine.

Is something like this possible, that 2d works but 3d dies ?? :)
