I've been battling search engine redirect issues for a few months now. I've done Malwarebytes, TDSSkiller, etc and they have removed some threats, but the sporadic redirects still happen on all major search engines.

I'm hoping you will be able to provide some guidance on fixing this. I have attached the requested logs from the preliminary instructions. Thanks in advance for you help!

You have 10 versions of Java running. - one is current, 9 outdated versions making the system vulnerable. The easiest way to remove them all is this: (Current version v6u26 will also be removed. Instructions at end of program for the updating.
You have multiple old versions of Java and do not have the current version. The best way to handle that is to run the following: Note: I do not want this log!

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

Important!***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that
a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.Note: Do not leave this log.
Download and install then most current version and update of Java RuntimeEnvironment (JRE)HERE.
===========================================
I strongly recommend that you get all the years of ta data off the system and on to a CD. They will be safe there and it will free up hard drive space. To access any time, just put the CD in the Drive.
===========================================
Please run the following. You will most likely have many infected files in the Java cache and I can instruct you in how to remove them:
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESETOnlineScan
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
[o] Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    [o] Double click on the
    esetSmartInstallDesktopIcon.png
    on your desktop.
  • Check 'Yes I accept terms of use.'
  • Click Start button

  • Uncheck 'Remove found threats'
  • Check 'Scan archives/
  • Leave remaining settings as is.
  • Press the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please wait for the scan to finish.

  • Push the Back button
  • Push Finish

NOTE: If no malware is found then no log will be produced. Let me know if this is the case.
=====================================
I'll direct you with Combofix after we get these files off the system.

Thank you for the help, Bobbye! I followed all your instructions and pasted the log file from ESET scan below. It did find a few issues as you predicted.

One question for you: It seems you only need one version of Java (the newest one) active and running. I do Java updates when it pops up to tell me, so why doesn't the update overlay & replace the older versions? Should I ignore the Java pop-ups and just download it manually in the future?

ESET Scan results:

C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\jar_cache2039546504192523290.tmp a variant of Java/Exploit.CVE-2010-0842.L trojan
C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\jar_cache3891066855226239560.tmp probably a variant of Java/TrojanDownloader.OpenStream.NBU trojan
D:\I386\Apps\APP09339\src\CompaqPresario_Spring06.exe a variant of Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch application
D:\I386\Apps\APP09339\src\HPPavillion_Spring06.exe a variant of Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch application

1. It seems you only need one version of Java (the newest one) active and running. Yes, only the most current. The updates are for security reasons, so once an update is out, any old versions become vulnerabilities.
2. I do Java updates when it pops up to tell me, I discourage using any auto-update except for the antivirus .
3. why doesn't the update overlay & replace the older versions? Because it just doesn't! Neither does the Adobe Reader.
4.Should I ignore the Java pop-ups and just download it manually in the future?Yes, That's what I recommend. by doing that, you will remember to remove the old version.

To turn off the Java auto update:
Control Panel> Java> Update tab> Uncheck the box for 'check automatically for updates'> Check Yes to confirm> OK> Close.

I see logs with the Java updater running an as many as 15 outdated versions on the systems! I think the malware writers are taking advantage of this because everyone who has malware in the Java cache has at least one outdated version of Java.

I'm surprised you don't have more showing in the Java cache. To remove:
To clear the Java Plug-in cache:

  • [1]. Click Start > Control Panel.
[2]. Double-click the Java icon in the control panel.
    java.png
    The Java Control Panel appears.
    plugin_cache1.jpg

[3].Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files. The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
    plugin_cache2.jpg

[4] Click Delete Files. The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
    plugin_cache3.jpg

[5]. Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.
Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.
[6]. Click Apply> OK on Temporary Files Settings window.

& follow the prompts to run.
  • When the scan completes , a report will be generated-it will open a text window. Please paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in next reply..
Re-enable your Antivirus software.

Note 1:Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note 2: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
Note 3: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
Note 4: CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Note 5: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion", restart computer to fix the issue.

That's good info to know about Java and the auto-updates. I completed all the steps you laid out.

**** I did disable the AV and Firewall prior to ComboFix running, but CF still popped up a warning saying it was on. However, it appeared to still run OK with the exception of it trying to reference something called 'NIRKMD' at the end of each stage and not finding it, so it popped up a warning box. I just hit 'OK' and it went to the next stage, just had to keep clearing the warnings after each stage.

This deletion in Combofix usually means an infected flash drive has been use. It need to be disinfected:
You may have a flash drive infection. These worms travel through your portable drives. If they have been connected to other machines, they may now be infected.

Please disinfect all movable drives
  1. Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
Note: Some security programs will flag Flash_Disinfector as being some sort of malware, you can safely ignore these warnings
  3. The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  4. Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  5. Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.
=================

One more scan to make sure all the bad entries have been removed:
Download HijackThis http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HijackThis.zipand save to your desktop.
  • Extract it to a directory on your hard drive called c:\HijackThis.
  • Then navigate to that directory and double-click on the hijackthis.exe file.
  • When started click on the Scan button and then the Save Log button to create a log of your information.
  • The log file and then the log will open in notepad. Be sure to click on Format> Uncheck Word Wrap when you open Notepad
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and paste (Ctrl+V) the log in your next reply.

NOTE: Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Bobbye, will this Flash Disinfector also work on a portable hard drive? I have an older Western Digital that is an actual disk drive, it's not flash. I do back ups to it a few times a year.

Thanks...

Yes. Notice in the instructions referring to "all movable drives." Just be sure it's connected to the computer when you run the disinfector.

Below is the log file from the last ComboFix run. I'm going to run HijackThis and then paste its logfile in my next reply.

Please give me an update on how the system is running. Has the redirect been resolved?

You're welcome- but I have one more thing to ask:

You have a lot of processes on the Startup menu that will start on boot, then run in the background. These are all available to you through All Programs when you need them. Stopping them from starting on boot does not uninstall anything. It just allows the resources to be applied elsewhere.

There are also some Services set to Automatic Startup Type. This means every time you start the computer, they all start, By changing the Startup to Manual, they will only start when needed.

Would you like to stop these entries? It would be done in the HJT log and a short script for Combofix. I have most of it done.

Let me know, then we'll finish up.

Yes, I go into MSCONFIG every so often and remove certain programs and processes that I know I don't need to run automatically, but many of them add themselves back as soon as you open them manually. VERY annoying...

If you have something that would help with that, I'd definitely be interested.

Thank you again!

Please print this log. You will need it to change Services and take processes off of Startup

Boot into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard.
  • Select the Safe Mode option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.

Click on Start> Run> Type services.msc> enter> Find each of the Services (023) you checked in HJT. For all but one, double click to open> Change Startup Type tp Manual. The exception is Java Quick Starter Change the Startup Type to Disabled and Stop the Service.
Exit Services when finished.

Stay in Safe Mode and go on to next reply. Keep the print out near you.

Continuing with Startup Cleanup: You can uncheck any processes that you stopped in HijackThis. None need to start on boot. The exe at the end of the entry is 'usually' what you will see in Startup:

To remove entries from the Startup Menu using the msconfig utility:
  • Click on Start> Run> type in msconfig> enter>
    msconfig_open_xp.gif
  • Click on Selective Startup
  • Choose the Startup tab:
    startup_tab_xp.gif

    All images courtesy NetSquirrel
  • To expand the Command Column, (this shows what the process 'belongs' to) hold left mouse button down on the dividing line on frame above Location and move to the right to expand.
  • Uncheck any processes you do not need to start on boot.
  • Click on Apply> OK when finished.
NOTE:
When you reboot the system the first time after making changes using the msconfig utility, a nag message comes up that can be ignored and closed after checking 'don't show this message again.' Remain in Selective Startup to retain those changes.
========================================
Please reboot back into Normal Mode- close nag message> stay in Selective Startup
=======================================
Please run this Custom CFScript:

  • [1]. Close any open browsers.
[2]. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
[3]. Open notepad> click on Format> Uncheck 'Word Wrap'> and copy/paste the text in the code below into it:Be sure to scroll down to include ALL lines.

Okay, Combofix look fine. You still have some unneeded processes on startup. Most are auto-updaters. I don't allow any auto-updates except the AV.

System is clean! Removing all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
  • Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    CF_Uninstall-1.jpg
  • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
-----
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.
------------------------------------------
  • You should now set a new Restore Point and remove the old restore points to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points.
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
  • Click "System Restore".
  • Choose "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
  • Give the Restore Point a name> click "Create".
  • Go back and follow the path to > System Tools.
    [*]Choose Disc Cleanup
[*]Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you want.
    [*]Click the "More Options" Tab.
[*]Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Keep the directions I gave you. Keep the system lean, don't run any processes you don't need to, stop auto-updates, stay safe:

Tips for added security and safer browsing: (Links are in Bold Blue)
  1. Browser Security
[o] Safe Settings (Please ignore the suggestion to use the Registry Editor in this section "Creating a Custom Security Zone")
[o] ZonedOut. This manages the Zones in Internet Explorer. (For IE7 and IE8, Windows 2000 thru Vista. No Windows 7)
    [o] Replace the Host Files
[o] Google Toolbar Pop Up Blocker
[o]Web of Trust (WOT) Site Advisor. Traffic-light rating symbols show which rate the site for Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy, Child Safety.
  2. Have layered Security:
[o]Antivirus :(only one):Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus
    [o] [o]Avast-Free Antivirus
[o]Firewall (only one): Use bi-directional firewall. Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Comodo
    [o]Zone Alarm
  3. Antimalware: I recommend all of the following:
[o]Spywareblaster: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX.
    [o]Spybot Search & Destroy
  4. Updates: Stay current:
[o] the Microsoft Download Sitefrequently. All updates marked Critical and the current SP updates.
[o]Adobe Reader Install current, uninstall old.
[o]Java Updates Install current, uninstall old.
  5. Tracking Cookies
    Reset Cookie:
[o]For Internet Explorer: Internet Options (through Tools or Control Panel) Privacy tab> Advanced button> check 'override automatic Cookie handling'> check 'accept first party Cookies'> check 'Block third party Cookies'> check 'allow per session Cookies'> Apply> OK.
[o]For Firefox: Tools> Options> Privacy> Cookies> check ‘accept Cookies from Sites’> Uncheck 'accept third party Cookies'> Set Keep until 'they expire'. This will allow you to keep Cookies for registered sites and prevent or remove others. (Note: for Firefox v3.5, after Privacy click on 'use custom settings for History.')
I suggest using the following two add-on for Firefox. They will prevent the Tracking Cookies that come from ads and banners and other sources:
    AdBlock Plus
    Easy List
[o]For Chrome: Tools> Options> Under The Hood> Privacy Section> CHECK 'Restrict how third party Cookies can be used'> Close.
  6. Do regular Maintenance
Clean the temporary internet files often:
    [o] Temporary File Cleaner
    [o] ATF Cleaner by Atribune
  7. Restore Points:
    [o]See System Restore Guide
  8. Safe Email Handling
[o] Don't open email from anyone you don't know.
[o] Don't open Attachments in the email. Safe to your desktop and scan for viruses using a right click
[o] Don't leave your personal email address on the internet. Have a separate email account at one of the free web-based emails like Yahoo.
Please let me know if you find any bad link.

Bobbye, thank you so much for the help. Seriously, it's a tremendous service you and your colleagues provide. I blog (as do my friends), so you'll be getting some good press from me...

If you ever need foodie advice or some help on a good bottle of vino, just let me know...Pay it forward...
