  1. Heres my problem I have shared my wireless connection on the laptop, hooked up an ethernet cable from desktop to laptop but its saying unplugged on desktop there is no light by the ethernet port on desktop, both computers running windows 7
now I have tried 4 different cables that I know work, both the ethernet ports on the laptop and desktop work have tried them both and they connect almost instantly, is there a setting somewhere I am missing, please help because I really dont want to go buy a 50 footer and run to connect my desktop to internet.
    Thank you in advance.

Have you right clicked on "share this network connection" on the adapter in the connection manager:

Also you may want to disable then re-enable the adapter...

also make sure only the adapter you want to use is enabled.... also check for a virtual connection like my screenshot above.

If one of them has a really low end NIC or an old one, you may need a crossover cable rather than a straight.

Yeah, you're doing it wrong. Highlight both the LAN and Wifi connections on the laptop (on same screen as screenshot above), right-click, select 'bridge connections'.
