Earlier this year, at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, EA first announced that a new SimCity game was in the works. Details regarding availability were kept under wraps at the time, but now the company has come forward at E3 revealing the release target for SimCity is February 2013. The title will be developed by Maxis using their new GlassBox game engine, a new physics engine, and will be fully 3D.

The game will simply be called SimCity, not SimCity 5, as it’s a total reboot of the franchise and goes back to its roots as a true city-building simulator. There are several new gameplay elements, such as finite resources and upgradeable buildings, and Maxis promises to simulate everything you see, from the individual cars on the road to citizens facing everyday challenges such as losing a job or finding a new one.

A new multiplayer mode will allow players to "change the world together.” Each player gets their own city and can forge partnerships with one another to share resources or boost imports and exports.

In addition to the full-fledged, PC-exclusive game, EA and Maxis will also be releasing SimCity Social in the next few weeks for the Facebook crowd. The game was developed in collaboration with Playfish and looks to be a direct competitor to Zynga’s Cityville. Facebook users are told to expect "no set linear paths to follow.” Cities evolve as a direct result of player-driven choice and players will have to deal with things like fires, crime and pollution, as well as building friendly relationships or intense rivalries with other cities.

Looks like "Simcity Social" is just Simcity 2000 for FB. Too bad Simcity fans are primarily anti-social males. Pssst, Firaxis..Simcity is NOT "The Sims" and most god game fans are NOT into meaningless chatter with people they barely know. Heck, they barely even do multiplayer! And no, The Sims doesn't qualify as a "god game" - its more of an interactive dollhouse/reality show that only chicks and a tiny number of weird guys play.

Oh yes. I've been waiting for this for a while. Seeing as my birthday is in February I think I'll be giving myself a birthday present. As for the facebook game...I couldn't care less.

Simcity reboot? So if something crashes into the city it the city will just reboot? :p

Wow guest, are you kidding me?
anyway, this will be one of my pick up when im bored sandbox games. Lord knows its fun making the biggest civilization in existence and then completely destroying it.

From the comments here I'm guessing SimCity is a good game. I had SimCity 2000, I believe, and I could not figure out for the life of me how to actually play the game. Granted I was like 9 at the time but I may have to give this a look and see if I can figure out how to play it now that I'm older and smrter.

I was so disappointed when they axed the series (played it non-stop as a kid) so I am really please to see it make a return, I will buy this for sure.

I hope that gameplay and stability take precedence over graphics (yeah right). I don't need to see sun flares on the windshields of passing cars.

I will buy it as long as it does not have facebook or a sims tie-in

Indeed the first 4 were good. I'm not gonna say this one is until I play it.

I also would like to see gameplay take precedent over graphics but I really dislike how maxis has been making their games look like kids cartoons. Something along the lines of anno 1404 or anno 2070 would be nice.

I use to love playing this game and can't wait for the rebooted version, but no way in hell am I going to pay EA $99.99 for it. When I saw that price I just laughed in they face.

Haha, they're actually showcasing the game engine as a "feature" of the game.

"Order now and we'll allow you to interact with your environment with a keyboard. Or you can purchase the Mouse DLC for $2.99 and use a mouse to control your game!"

The entire SimCity line has been plagued with instability, lack of multi-core support, and lack of scalability when building large cities. I kept hoping they would fix these issues, but they never did.

Seeing that this "new" version won't even support DirectX10/11, It looks like more of the same from a title with a ton of promises, but disappointing results. Anno2070 is the best alternative for now.

Why even bother? I'll simply play Anno 2070. Maxis is an old school game company and before DLC and subscription gaming, they were ripping their customers off with buggy non scalable titles. And as an old school gamer, we punished them by not purchasing it. Now they come back and try to win PC gamers back? Its not going to work we are not console gamers. We punish for crapware and don't forgive. Just watch how badly the next iD game sales on PC are after that money grab call Rage. Maxis won't sale 50,00 copies of this crapware phase two.
