My secondary HD(maxtor) is giving me a smart failure on startup. I ran the maxtor diagnostics and it claims to have fixed the drive but the prolem is still there. Am I out a hard drive or is there some other after market software that can solve my problem. thanks

is the drive still running ,can you access drive???
does it make noise??
can you see it in bios??
can you open machine and feel it running??
if you can see the drive and youcan access it ,may be time to get a new drive before this one bites the dust
disable smart for the drive

It would be a good idea to use some SMART utility to see what is the exact error.

the drive runs fine, it shows up in bios as well as windows and I can install and save files to it. Using the program active smart, it gives me a "reallocated sector bad" but no option to fix.

You have a bunch bad sectors on the drive and the number is more than the manufacturer set to be "normal". You really can't get rid of the warning message (AFAIK Maxtor utilities don't give you a "drive erase" option) and you should consider replacing the drive. You can still use the thing, but I wouldn't put anything important on it.
