Resolved SMART HDD scareware infection

Laptop running Windows XP has been infected with the SMART HDD scareware. After clearing all the warning boxes about not being able to write to the drive, SMART HDD Repair does will not close. I have not clicked on anything in the dialogue to "Try" the software in order to "fix" the problems detected. All of my desktop icons are missing, there are no Programs on my start menu and I can't run anything else. I'm using TrendMicro AntiVirus with updated signatures. I read your thread on how to start this process, but since I can't run anything, I'm not sure how to proceed.
