So you only have PCI slots and want to game?

Yes,this is it.And only one slot...
( silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=46988 about d201gly2+hd2400 problem)

Maybe someone else knows more info, but i didn't think a mb and card can have problems. What card do you have now and is it working?

Alright but if you can shop at newegg, if you pick up a 8400gs, make sure you buy the evga one, it has higher stats then the rest.

I successfully upgraded my mobo from PCI only to AGP. That is my best advice to anyone on this thread. If you have an HP or similar type PC make sure to swap mobos for the same brand and model with an AGP or PCI-e slot and it could work without getting Code Purple because I didn't. Now, I can use the HD 3850 AGP in my AGP 4x slot and that will at least twice as powerful as the 9500GT PCI. I have AGP ability for about $45 dollars total and that is pretty awesome.

It will be far, far, far more than twice more powerful. Buy why an AGPx4 slot ? Was it the only board for the computer you could find ?

My PC was given to me and it is a HP. If I want to mobo swap without getting "Code Purple" error message, I have to swap for the same type mobo of make and model. In my case, there are versions with an AGP 4x slot. I could have stuck a PCI-e 2.0 mobo that would have matched the dimensions perfectly but most likely would have got "Code Purple" which meant I would have been locked out. Also, I would have to buy more components for a mobo that still isn't what I really want so my $45 dollar AGP upgrade is the best choice for me since I can use everything that is in here already. Look forward to getting my HD 3850 soon!

Well good luck teklord. :)
All i know i plan to continue using PCI. Not on this rig which i have now, because i will be moving on to PCIE soon, a galaxy 9500GT 1GB, and a 3650 OC by visiontek or maybe a 4670 by visiontek with gddr3 memory.

However i am buying a Gateway Quad Core later this year and i plan to install Windows 2000 or XP depending on how everything works out) on it and turn it into a ultimate PCI gaming machine. Plan to buy a Albatron 8600GT first :)

You're hopeless, I hope you enjoy wasting money (Or you just have so much you don't care, in which case you're being envied).

Everyone else, move along, nothing to see here since it makes no sense.

Thanks General. I always said you can use whatever you want and that is fine with me. Me personally, I'm about to order my HD 3850 AGP. Stay positive brother.

Thanks and let us know how your benchmarks is, the 3850 for AGP is one of the best for the bus. Also which brand are you buying and what is your PSU?. Btw do you have youtube, sub if you want on my account:

Alright sir , thanks for the lovely insight :) But unlike some people when i buy something, i want to keep it forever, and i didn't spend hundreds of dollars on all my pci cards just to throw them away. So with my secondary computer the quad core when i get it, i will just use them on that rig. For older games, and what not.

Peace

It is the best on the bus, actually.

That's the point - that you spent hundreds of dollars on PCI cards. But I've argued this long enough and on sufficient forums to know you won't care, no matter what people tell you, so I'll just wish you happy gaming.

I'm getting the Sapphire one because it is clocked a little higher and may be a little quieter than the Powercolor or HIS versions. Cheaper than the 9500GT PCI and at least twice as powerful on AGP 4x. With 8 times the bandwidth as PCI and it's completely dedicated to the GPU, I'm glad I got this mobo with AGP 2.0. I'll post GPU-Z specs when I set it up.

My PSU is hec Orion XPOWER 585W. Not a well known name but it is doing very well so far and for what I paid for it, it can't be beat. It shows no signs of destroying my computer components and is more than enough to power my HD 3850. Got it from the Egg.

I'll check you out on YouTube, BTW what is your Gamespot screen name because I would like put you on my tracking/friends list.

The Sapphire card uses a simple stock cooler (I have one of my rigs, which is a P4 overclocked to 4.2Ghz). The fan is pretty noisy if it fans runs fast. It is way too expensive for the performance when compared to a PCI-E card (But tons better than any PCI card), but on AGP, it reigns supreme.

Happy gaming.

Alright cool(can't wait for the GPU) The Sapphire one looks good. :)

Yea that should be able to handle it good.

I haven't been on gamestop in a while, but i plan on going there and posting more and stuff soon. But its right here:

An ultimate pci rig is still low end, its one thing to to buy best price/performance for a low end, its another to waste money.

why not just buy a pci e card to go with the quad, its a waste of hardware if you dont.

I already explain that, so let me explain again.

This is my rig now and this is how the slots are set up:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowI...-1620(2.4GHz) 2GB DDR2 NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE

As you can see i only have 1 pci slot and 3 pcie slots one of them being X16. That pci slot is clearly for a sound card which i get will soon. And very soon i am picking up 2 pcie 2.0 cards for the x16 slot.

This is how the Quad Core is setup:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowI...300(2.50GHz) 4GB DDR2 Intel GMA 3100 - Retail

The Quad has 2 PCI slots and 2 extra PCIE slots, one being x16. So i can use a sound card in the pci slot and a pci card in the other. Thus for hardcore PCI gaming with XP pro. Plan to turn it into a ultimate PCI gaming machine, just for the older games and some new ones, well ones that does not well with Vista. I didn't buy all these PCI cards just to throw them away, i paid too much for them to began with. And besides i like PCI , even tho i am moving on to pcie with my new rig. :)

That PCI-e slot is 1.0 so any 2.0 cards you buy will not exceed 1.0 specs in bandwidth. I have to be honest here and state that the very utmost best that the utmost best PCI card can do will get pwned by a low end PCI-e card, so there is absolutely no point in considering PCI cards if you have even PCI-e 1.0 capability.

You can game with what you want General, but the title of this thread is "So you only have PCI slots and want to game?", not "So you have PCI-e slots but like to torture yourself with PCI cards anyways?" A lot of people looking for help on this thread bought OEM PC's not realizing their GPU situation and are stuck with PCI slots only. So there is a real need and niche for PCI cards IMO, but not as the first choice which is why I upgraded to AGP and a HD 3850 as my stopgap solution versus continuing to purchase minimally effective PCI cards. :D
