Some Programs Won't Open

I have a Dell Inspiron 1318.

When I try to open programs, they will either not open at all or they will have a spot in the taskbar but there is no window open.

For example, itunes will not open at all.
I suspect a virus, so I've downloaded some programs from my other laptop (CCleaner as one) and when I open setup, the program will be in the taskbar but there is no window open, so it won't install.

Any suggestions?

Edit: When I turn it on, it will go past the Dell loading screen and then the screen will turn black for a very, very long time, then it will get past it and turn on.

There was also a time where something similar to the "welcome screen" (of vista) would show up but it would be gray/black.

It also takes a very long time to get into safemode.

Can you boot to Safe Mode?
If so, install and run MalwareBytes or other antispyware, and antivirus software in Safe Mode. Many will not run, but some will do a good job.

Oh, progress! I just left the computer open while malwarebytes stayed in the taskbar not doing anything, and then all of a sudden it decided to open. Running a scan now.

Good! That is one program that we know opens and runs on a normally working XP computer booted to SAFE MODE.
We will be awaiting further word.

It found one thing: hijack.displayproperties. I removed it... also scanned with CCleaner and it removed some stuff. Should I scan with other programs? I installed ccleaner, hijackthis and systemcare (a program my friend suggested).

It's still taking a very long time to startup.

Please help, the laptop is really needed right now for school work, and it would help if it was running smoothly.

As before, Scan with Avast or Avira antivir free version. Scan with Windows Defender. Scan with MalwareBytes, and then scan with SuperAntispyware.

Then immediate reboot, and scan in <SAFE MODE> with MalwareBytes, and Avira or Avast.

Then run HiJackThis, and send us the log.


Tell us what the configuration is of that 1318? How big is the hard drive. How much memory?
