Sony offers Music Unlimited app for Android

Sony has released a "Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity" app on the Android Market in the US, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. You can also grab it from the Qriocity Mobile website.

Music Unlimited is a cloud-based, digital music service that lets you stream content anytime and anywhere. You get access to 7 million licensed songs from major labels including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, and EMI Music, as well as leading independent labels and major publishers worldwide. The back-end of the service is powered by Omnifone, which is partnered with rights holders around the world to provide the global catalogue, and Gracenote, which used its music identification and discovery technologies to let for subscribers discover new artists and albums.

Music Unlimited has been previously announced by Sony in September 2010, and it officially debuted in December 2010. Users can synchronize their existing music files and playlists from other media players to enjoy their existing music at any time across all compatible devices.

The service lets users listen on a wide variety of Internet-connected Sony devices, including Sony's 2010 models of network-enabled Bravia TVs, Blu-ray players, Blu-ray home theater systems, PlayStation 3s, as well as Vaio and other personal computers. While it's been available on Sony products for months, this marks the first time you can access it on your phone over Wi-Fi or 3G. Sony specifically lists its Sony Ericsson Android-based phones, including the Xperia arc, the Xperia Play, the Xperia X10, the Xperia X8, and the Xperia neo, but the company also notes that the app will work on Android-based third party devices.

"'Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity' offers extensive breadth of content, easy music discovery and personalization through a synchronized music experience across a variety of compatible home entertainment and portable devices," Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President of Sony Corporation, said in a statement. "'Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity' for Android is the next evolution of the service which enhances the value proposition for our customers."

Last time I checked, there was no reported identity theft from the Sony hack. But nice try at trying to be witty, though.

Anyway, I read the whole article, and I didn't see the word "price," or "subscription." Is this thing free of charge? A la Grooveshark?


EDIT: Just clicked the previous 2010 article; a little more of background information, specifically regarding the price, would have been nice...

Looks like it's $3.99 for the basic plan and $9.99 for the premium service. It's not exactly clear what's really in the basic plan so I'd assume most would want the functionality of the premium plan. Not really that bad if you listen to a lot of music.
