Sorry, another browser redirect thread :(

  1. Hey, i've been having a lot of trouble with a redirect virus for a while. It seems to affect every search engine i've tried, with being an exception. was my default search engine, but every link just takes me on walk about.

I've also noticed that this is affecting all devices on the network, from my sister's computer in her room, to browsing on my iPod touch.

Below is a hijack this log, i would greatly appreciate some help!

Welcome to TechSpot sycolink.I'll help with the malware.

I notice you are running both AVG and Avast. Multiple antivirus programs can make the system more vulnerable as well as slow it down. Please decide which you want to keep and remove the other. Here are tools to help: Download the removal tool only for the program you are not going to keep.

Please reboot the computer when finished.

Then you will need to follow our preliminary removal steps HERE.

When you have finished, please paste in the requested logs for review.

There is nothing in this HJT log that indicates a problem. We no longer use this program in our preliminary removal, but use it at the end of cleaning to make sure all bad entries have been removed.

I am also not certain of the status of v2.0.4 on HJT. We still use v2.0.2 and there is a Beta version v2.0.3.

Thank you, i've added the logs as attachments.

During the processes, i had trouble with windows updates, and updating malwarebytes. I was not granted access to the websites either, so i fear this may have something to do with whatever is infecting the system/network. Unfortunately i had to make do with the programs as the were, but hopfully it will be okay.

Thank you. I noticed there are two entries for restrictions:

    C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNetworkRestricted
    C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalSystemNetworkRestricted

The malware has likely done this. Hopefully we will repair it as we go along. Please run the following while I finish checking these logs. NOTE the directions to disable security before running:

Please download ComboFix from Here and save to your Desktop.

    • [1]. Do NOT rename Combofix unless instructed.
[2].Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
      [3].Close any open browsers.
[4]. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts to run.
    • NOTE: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If it does not, restart your computer to restore your connection.
[5]. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
[6]. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always allow.
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
[7]. A report will be generated after the scan. Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt in next reply.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Note: Make sure you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

Please find the combofix log attached :)

I see that you live in America? I'm from England, so it's awfully late over here. I'll be heading off for tonight, but i'll be sure to check back tomorrow.

Thank you so much for help so far.

I started working on this last night, When I saw some o the contents, I stopped in order to 'consult' with you:

You are currently running 3 file sharing- P2P programs:

I also noted Antares Autotune VST RTAS TDM v5.08 which appears to be a torrent download.
I wrote the script for removal of all of them as well as the data from them. The reasons are:

    P2P or 'file sharing' Warning:
Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. I suggest that you uninstall Azureus, Vuze, Limewire for the following reasons:
    • As long as you are using file sharing networks and programs which are from sources that are not documented, you cannot verity that a download is legitimate.
    • Malware writers use these program to include malicious content.
    • Fie sharing is usually unmonitored and there is a danger that your private files might be accessed.
    • The 'sharing' also includes malware that the shared system has on it.
    • Files that are illegal can be spread through file sharing.

Please read the information on P2P Warning to help you better understand these dangers.

I then found 94 Locked Registry entries- an incredibly large number- most of which are associated with ACDSee Photo Manager 2007. They appear to be for different file extensions, one which is ACDSee private folder. I have to 'unlock' these entries in order to determine if there is any malware in them. If there is, they will need to be removed.

Trying to clean a system with active, multiple file sharing programs is useless- I clean out the front door of the system and malware comes in the back door.

So I decided to wait and ask you if you are willing to remove all of these programs and possibly some of the locked images, if necessary?
  7. sycolink

    sycolink TS Rookie Topic Starter

    Hello again!

To cut a long answer short, yes i will be willing to remove these programs.

You mentioned a script to remove them, so i'm guessing a conventional uninstall is no good? I'll follow any instructions you provide in your next post.

    Thank you.

Okay, let's start here. I can't fit all the entries in to one post- so leave the log from this run and I'll set up the rest.
    Custom CFScript

    • [1]. Close any open browsers.
[2]. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
[3]. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code below into it:
    c:\programdata\Alwil Software
    c:\program files\Alwil Software
    c:\program files\Vuze
    c:\program files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
    c:\program files\LimeWire 5.2.13
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it will produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt . Please attach to your next reply.

Please run the following when you are through with the last CF Fix:

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus Scanner HERE
    • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
    • When asked, allow the Active X control to install
    • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
    • Click Start
    • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
    • Click Scan
    • Wait for the scan to finish
    • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
    • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.
    Please download HijackThis HERE.
    • Save it to a permanent folder (such as C:\HJT).
    • Open HijackThis, and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.
    • A Notepad document will open. Please post the contents of that document.

Include the following in next reply:
Combofix report after running the script
    Eset log
    HijackThis log

    Hello again, some bad news.

It seems i'm not able to use "Eset", the virus scanner you told me to use in your last post. I've tried both Firefox and IE, but neither will allow me to advance.

    What should i do?
  13. Bobbye

Bobbye Helper on the Fringe Posts: 16,335   +36

    No problem- use this instead:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
    • Click Accept and the web scanner will begin to load
    • If a yellow warning bar appears at the top of the browser, click it and choose Install ActiveX Control
    • You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Install
    • If you are prompted about another ActiveX control called Kaspersky Online Scanner GUI part then allow it to be installed also.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
[o] Scan using the following Anti-Virus database> Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
[o] Scan Options: Scan Archives> Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      [o] Select My Computer
    • The program will start to scan your system.
    • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Leave this log in addition to the new ComboFix report.
And please let me know how the system is doing now.
  14. sycolink

    sycolink TS Rookie Topic Starter

I'm really sorry, but this is still giving me problems. The "database update" did manage to dowload after many connection attempts. Eventually it gave me:

"0 [ERROR: Connection to updates source cannot be established]"

And from here i can't advance to the next part of your instructions.

To answer your question about the system, it's still being redirectied in search engines.
  15. sycolink

    sycolink TS Rookie Topic Starter

Guh, more things are going wrong. It seems now even is falling to this; so i literally have all search engines redirecting me. I can only assume it will be the same on all the other machines too.

Just thought i'd give you a heads up :\
  16. Bobbye

Bobbye Helper on the Fringe Posts: 16,335   +36

Try the Eset scan again lease. If it fails to run, I need to know exactly what message you're getting

About your last post: this is NOT a "Google specific" problem. It's not even a "Google virus." People call it a "Google redirect" because most of them use Google as a search engine. Any malware can redirect any browser

You may have to do a DNS flush and reset the router, but that is no big deal. I don't assume anything if possible.

Did you run the second CFScript? Where is the report from it?
  17. sycolink

    sycolink TS Rookie Topic Starter

So i start Eset, and it completes the "Program download and update" 100%.

However when it moves onto the "Database update" it stays at 0% and fails. Beneath is exactly what comes up during the process.

The program is starting. Please wait...

0 [ERROR: Connection to updates source cannot be established]

That last line (with the giant ERROR) also comes up in a message. Once i click okay, i find no way to continue on with the program.

That might make sense, what you said about reseting the router. I don't understand how this would affect things like my iPod touch or the PS3; so maybe it's something within the router which is causing all this?

Yes, i did run the second CFScript. You can find the log attached.

  18. Bobbye

Bobbye Helper on the Fringe Posts: 16,335   +36

My job is to help find and remove malware from your computer system- not fix your iPod or PS3. If you do have a DNS Changer malware infection and if the computer,iPod and PS3 all use the router to connect, then fixing one might fix the other. I can have you do that.

But I am not comfortable with the locked image files- they are backed- they are locked. What's in them? What images are being locked by ACDsee. I am not willing to set up all those entries again just to have them reappear.
Please print the following directions. you will need them when you don't have computer access:

You will need to do a DNS Flush, then reset your router.

I wasn't asking you to fix those other devices, forgive me if you misunderstood. I was meerly stating that the DNS flush might be a good idea, as all those devices connect to the router.

I don't know where these locked image files are, or even what they are. You don't seem to like them too much though. Is there anything i should do regarding them before i perfrom a DNS flush?

I don't "like" them because the denote image files and they are locked. They have ignored the script I wrote to remove them-OR-they got removed by returned. that means that I have no idea what those files contain- whether they are legitimate or not. I have no idea why they are locked or what's locking them. I cannot give you a 'head's up you're clean' as long as those files hold unknown content.

I have directed you to two different online antivirus scans. Neither will work on the system. Adding this stuff together makes a reason for concern. As far as I know, you have an internet connection.

Go ahead and do the flush and reset.

    I actually love you. Seriously.

The DNS Flush worked, thank you so very much! I really appriciate the help you've given me over the last few days, i wouldn't have been able to get rid of whatever it was without you.

Once again, thanks so much; you've made me so happy :)

It's nice to be loved! If you had told me 20 posts ago that you had lost your internet connection then, I would have started the process sooner!

So the problem are resolved? If so, we can clean up!
Removing all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
    • Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
    • Click START> then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
    • Click the CleanUp! button.
    • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
    • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
    • You should now set a new Restore Point and remove the old restore points to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points.
    • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
    • Click "System Restore".
    • Choose "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
    • Give the Restore Point a name> click "Create".
    • Go back and follow the path to > System Tools.
      [*]Choose Disc Cleanup
[*]Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you want.
      [*]Click the "More Options" Tab.
[*]Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one.

Let me know if I can be of more help in the future.

    You're welcome! Glad to help.

Please follow these simple steps to keep your computer clean and secure:

1.Disable and Enable System Restore: See System Restore Guide This will help you understand what this is, why you need to clean and set restore points and what information is in them.
    2.Stay current on updates:
    • Visit the Microsoft Download Sitefrequently. You should get All updates marked Critical and the current SP updates: Windows XP> SP2, SP3.
    • Visit this Adobe Reader site often and make sure you have the most current update. Uninstall any earlier updates as they are vulnerabilities.
    • Check this site often.Java Updates Stay current as most updates are for security. Uninstall any earlier versions in Add/Remove Programs.
3.Make Internet Explorer safer. Follow the suggestions HERE This Tutorial will help guide you through Configuring Security Settings, Managing Active X Controls and other safety features.
4.Remove Temporary Internet Files regularly: Use ATF Cleaner by Atribune or TFC
    5. Use an AntiVirus Software(only one)
See Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

6.Use a good, bi-directional firewall(one software firewall) I recommend either of these software firewalls.- both are free and good:
    Comodo or Zone Alarm
7.Consider these programs for Extra Security
    • Spywareblaster: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX. It places kill bits to stop bad Active X controls from being installed. Remember to update it regularly.
    • IE/Spyad This places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • MVPS Hosts files This replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to which is your local computer.
    • Google Toolbar Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
