Sound only works in some games

I have a problem where my sound only works in some games. Works fine on youtube, playing music, etc. as well as many of my games. Others I get no sound at all. Some examples of games my sound won't work on: Overload, Starpoint Gemini Warlords, Ashes of the Singularity, and at least half a dozen others.
Have tried - updating audio drivers, uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, using the front headphone jack instead of the back panel. Windows audio troubleshooting could not detect a problem (of course).
Using the onboard sound from a MSI X370 Platinum motherboard and a pair of regular Logitech speakers. Also tried my headphones. Both connect via 3.5mm.
What am I missing? Why some games and not others?

Got my answer elsewhere - get the audio drivers from the motherboard website, not from Windows driver update. Leaving this here in case someone else has the same problem.
