Speech recognition and headset setup

im trying to setup my headset to work with a speech recognition software, each time I try it doesn't work when I record a sound in sound recorder it's fine but when I try to test the sound in the windows sound setting it doesn't work at all... I have two options in the audio panel settings idt and cam-suite virtual audio 1 I tried both, im using xp... my headset has two ends it has one for the headphone and one for mic but only the headphone works for both recording and hearing.
