Squadron 42, Star Citizen's single-player element featuring a famous cast, enters final...

Disclosure: I was an early backer and invested heavily during the first few years of development.

It's easy to take pot shots at Roberts, CIG, SQ42, and SC. It has been a long road with little indication we were ever going to see... well pretty much anything. We've had one system for so long that the additional 100+ we were promised seem like a lot of smoke and mirrors. Same goes for the massive backlog of ships. I forget the actual number but someone calculated that it would take at least 100 years to deliver on all the backlogged ships at the current rate of production.

But my take with this current news isn't proof or lack of proof that it's a scam. No, it's what follows that will be the proof. If SQ42 enters beta sometime next year and then ships late next year or early 25, then CR and CIG will be vindicated in my eyes. Then it's on to making the persistent universe feature complete, and expanding it while delivering more of the ships we've been waiting for. It's still a really tall order even if shipping SQ42 frees up a lot of resources.

But the thing a lot of nay-sayers need to know or remember is CR himself said that the PU will never be finished. The idea is that once all the gameplay elements are in place and we have a nice stable code base the developers will simply switch into continual expansion mode. We're not in a true Alpha, and we won't have either a true Beta or release. It'll be a rolling release and then they'll keep adding more features and elements as the game evolves. So according to CR they'll keep working on the game as long as people keep playing it.

Has this current news renewed my faith? No not really, but I do see some light at the end of a very long tunnel. The big question is it daylight or the on coming train? Well, we'll find out in a year or two I guess...
