start menu tool bar problem

hey all. i dont keep any icons on my desktop, i put them all on the quicklaunch to make things look neater. But because i have a bunch of items on the quicklaunch, i like to expand the start menu bar so that it's twice as thick as the normal size. My problem is that everytime i turn my computer off and turn it back on, it resets back to being the normal size.
anybody know how i can fix this? thanks

also i tried locking the toolbar but that didnt help at all. the bar just went back to the normal size and stayed locked...
