System File Checker question

Hey all, just looking for a little understanding about how sfc works. Typically when sfc is ran you put your Windows CD in to be used as the cross check. But what happens when you have installed service packs, hot fixes, etc. that are not on the CD. How then does sfc look to see if these files have been overwritten?

SFC operations

SFC is worried about

1. system file locations
2. directory and file permissions
3. and updates

There's a directory created for each MS Hotfix or Update at
C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB*******
and the catalogue of files modified allows the correctness to be validated
