System idle process...

since about 2 weeks ago i noticed this pc slowing down at just about everything it did and i went onto task manager and it said that the system idle process was taking up around 72% of the processor usage.

why has it suddenly shot up?

The system idle process is just the amount of "nothing" your computer is doing.
Mine is currently at 85% for instance.

That doesn`t mean to say there isn`t something slowing your PC.

Could be spyware or anti spyware or anti virus.
Get rid of Norton/Mcafee/ if you have them.
Uncheck everything in msconfig startup folder except firewall/av.
