System not booting windows xp

  1. when i try to boot it shows the message that windows did not start succesfully

    where u have to choose
    safe mode
    safe mode and comand prompt. you should understand what am talkin about.

    regardless of the option i choose it just freezes as soon as i select an option.

    there are many important files on the computer. what can i do to recover it?

    burn a copy of knoppix! boot from a cd or dvd...you don't need even installed linux on your machine to backup your data...when knoppix is on, mount partition and change read and write permission with a right click on it! Backup your data on a external hdd...cheers
