System Restore Renames Files

By bobcat

  1. After a successful System Restoration, XP Pro sometimes gives the message that some files were renamed.

    My questions are:
1 Why does the system rename files?
2 What are the consequences of such renaming for the user?
3 What kind of files does it rename?
4 How can one find out which files have been renamed?

Thanks for the reply. It doesn’t seem to answer my queries directly, but it’s not important. My questions were not posed because of a pressing problem, but rather to increase my knowledge and understanding of the system restoring process and anticipate possible complications.

Knowledge is always a good thing and I hope you will continue to try and increase yours.

The following may be a better explanation and also tells you how to handle renaming:

Thanks Bobbye for the positive response.

Yes, this does go a long way towards answering my questions. It may also explain why I suddenly found a strange file in My Documents after system restoration. My impression is that restoration may not be as innocuous and safe as MS would have us believe.

You're welcome. Sorry I missed this first time around.
