  1. Night Dive, the development studio behind the recent Enhanced Edition of System Shock, is working on a true remake of the 1994 classic.

Night Dive is a name you probably aren’t familiar with. The studio, founded by Stephen Kick and his wife Alix Banegas, has up to this point focused exclusively on getting older games to work on modern PC hardware. To date, they’ve breathed new life into more than 80 classic titles including System Shock and I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream.

Over time, however, Night Dive has developed an interest in not just licensing the rights to old games but acquiring them entirely. That’s exactly what the studio has done with System Shock and as revealed in a recent interview with Fast Company, a full remake of the original is well underway.

Best yet, Kick got in touch with the game’s original concept artist, Robert Waters, to reimagine his designs from the early ‘90s. Kick, who entered the industry as an artist himself, said seeing the difference between his artistic abilities back then compared to now and his ability to reinterpret those ideas has been really exciting.

The System Shock remake is also expected to land on consoles, another first for the studio. Night Dive head of business development, Larry Kuperman, said they’ve even had some conversations with regard to creating a sequel to System Shock 2. To really do another game in that series, he said, is going to take resources, time and commitment that they simply don’t have.

The executive added that it’s really not their core business, either, although that doesn’t discount the possibility of bringing in an outside studio to develop System Shock 3.

Wasn't the Bioshock series a spin off from the original System Shock?

I was never able to get into the first System Shock. I loved 2 though. I purchased that one from GOG a while back.
