Tesla is eliminating free, unlimited Supercharger access for new customers

Considering you can give your car a full charge at home for ~$12 for a 400 mile charge, I don't know why you'd want to spend time at their charging station. And realistically, I don't know who's driving 400 miles a day. Anyone who has an EV is familiar with the fact that you have to pay for pixies at the plug just like you have to pay for dinosaur squeezings at the pump.

I never thought that free charging from Tesla was economically sustainable long term, anyone who did is a fool. However, most people charge at home so this is pretty much a non issue. People are getting mad at Tesla for doing something for cars they had never intended to purchase anyway.

People are saying that free charging stations are the biggest perk to having a tesla. I think the biggest perk to having a tesla is not having to stop at stations at all to charge it.

All true - but to answer your question of why use a charging station: people use them for parking places. They put charging station in convenient places, so people would park there and go shopping or get a haircut. They've had to put signs up on them that says 'don't leave your car here for 3 hours'

Besides the promotional period wearing off - there's a basic economic principal at work here. What happens to the Demand of something when the price is 0? Answer - It goes to infinity. But Supply obviously can't, so there's a shortage.

This is also why there's a such a shortage of healthcare in countries where it's 'free'. Shortage in the form of months-long wait times.

Tesla had two possible outcomes to their free chargers - end the program, or have a TON of unhappy customers.

If what "they've done with the place here", is indicative of what they would do to Mars, then 50 years after they get there, Mars will be over populated and terribly polluted, and they'll have to move to Jupiter or beyond.
At least global warming will be welcomed.

People don't want to hear their own tailpipes, they want people everywhere to partake of the owner's good fortune and enjoyment of driving such a magnificent vehicle.
Maybe you don't, but some of us certainly do. I highly doubt I would have gone through the trouble of disconnecting and disabling the active noise cancellation system in my car for others benefit. You know, seeing as how said system only cancels out exhaust/engine noise inside the cabin...

Nah man, they're more likely blowing out their ears at point blank range with those crappy "ear buds". Those things will hit at least 100+db without breaking a sweat, so to speak.

'plain' dB in such a small confined space doesn't mean a whole lot. It is just a ratio between signal to noise. 100dB is not terribly damaging if all/most-all the noise is isolated like it is with 3-flange earbuds (though still not good). It is actually the physical pressure from the sound waves you need to worry about.

But you're right about the cheapo ear buds that don't form a seal. Partly because they 'cheat' by boosting the lower frequencies - which carry a greater amount of energy/pressure - and partly because people are inclined to turn them up whenever they hear outside noise (technically maintain the dB, while increasing pressure on the ear drum).

Of course, all this still nearly the same principle when you get a louder stereo because you made your car's exhaust louder.

Why not measure the db level at the drivers position, and also 1 meter directly behind the the tailpipe when you jump on it? I think you'll still be surprised at the differential.

This comments section gave me cancer. So many people missing the point, or using it as an opportunity to attack Musk and Tesla, and assuming so much without backing anything up with evidence....
And that one guy who thinks 'global warming is a scam'. Jesus EFFING Christ what a tw@t.

Perhaps so. But the fact remains, there really isn't that much to say about the topic itself. Tesla buyers solemnly swear that Musk is a philanthropist, and fantasized they would be getting free electricity from Tesla for the lifetime of whatever vehicle they gave him money to maybe condescend to build for them, at a "designated time to be named later".

Well that, and a "Supercharger" facility would eventually be placed at the end of every Tesla owners driveway, dispensing free fill ups for the life of the car, because well, they're entitled to it. :D

Good luck with that, and good luck with your chemo...:p

My logic is as follows.

What is more important to you, the power of the car or the noise it makes?

If it's just the power, then have a good silent exhaust system, or an electric car.

If it's the power, but you still want the noise, it can be more efficiently generated via an electronic recording, played back through exponential horn speakers. You can make it as loud and chest throbbing as you want, have a variety of sounds to choose from, and best of all, turn it off when you don't want it.

If it's just the noise, again the speakers come into play.

Heat is a byproduct from a combustion engine. Noise is too. Correlation with power has, over time, turned an unwanted byproduct into a desirable one by association, but it is a false one. A car can be quiet and powerful without being noisy, although it may be easier to make it noisy and powerful.

yeah, that's BS and I explained why in an earlier post.

If you want to make a ferrari as quite as a Toyota corolla then the resistance in the exhaust system will 1)feed back into the cabin and 2)make passing emissions impossible because of all the extra fuel you have to burn just to push the stuff out the end of the muffler.

More power = more fuel burn
More fuel burned = bigger explosions
bigger explosions = louder noise

We have this measure of sound called Decibels. dB is a measure of air pressure level. To create more power in a cylinder you have to create more PRESSURE on the piston head. This pressure is then released out the exhaust pipe. Muffling the sound too much reduces the power so in the name of fuel efficiency just get a smaller engine that's naturally quieter than trying to make a powerful one quiet.

Exactly!

To the others:
An exhaust system that is extremely quiet, is more than likely (almost always) more restrictive. More restrictive leads to power loss in most cases. Don't get me started on forced induction engines either, in order to gain power you need the least restriction possible for those. So if you want power, you're going to have more noise for a combustion engine. That also true for not only the exhaust, but the intake as well.

Yeah and sometimes you are forced to keep your mouth shut. That's not exactly the most efficient way to communicate either. But you are silenced for a reason. Reason being people are not going to listen to your verbal noise at that time. It doesn't have anything to do with how efficient you are with your verbal noise.

Exhaust can't be silenced at the push of a button. At least not with how the system is currently being built. Which is partly the reason why there is regulation for quietening an exhaust system. Regardless of how inefficient having mufflers may be. And if the inefficiency made that much difference, I am positively certain a new car would not be sold with mufflers.

(Note that I've been putting off responding to this nonsense, but the thread is still active, so what the hell).

The "fake car noise" was a topic in the short story, "The Marching Morons" : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Marching_Morons

In any event, I was dragged to a church in my youth, which had a real honest to worship god, pipe organ. I fell in love with the sound then, and I still am today. No matter how good you believe sound reproduction has become, the sound of that instrument can't be fully reproduced. In fact, I think the acid test of audio equipment still, is attempting to reproduce the sound of the acoustic piano.

Perhaps, but as of now, you need a really long extension cord to pull that off...:D

We're continuing to flog a dead horse here. Noise emission standards have been formalized for decades, and speaking for state inspections done in PA, an exhaust system cannot be modified from its stock configuration to pass.

So, if you want a louder system than the car is delivered with, do so at the risk of being ticketed for doing so.

OTOH, if you run around in your car sporting a 15" sup-woofer, hooked up to a 1000 watt amplifier, you can always fall back on the "black lives matter dogma", to try and avoid the ticket. It still doesn't make any particular individual any less of an a**hole, no matter which path to "noise nirvana"" is chosen.

But yes, when you're dealing with a high performance vehicle, its exhaust note will be more robust than that of a Kia "Anything". But not offensively so, and certainly not illegally so.
