RTWC FIFA 98 also had Glide support. I remember the awesome weather effects when using Glide on my Voodoo 2. I think you had to use a different executable for Glide, or maybe a specific flag in the shortcut.
Fun times.

I think if you're going to pick best sports game, you should pick a sport that has international appeal. About one in ten thousand Americans care for soccer. It's a game their little kids play for a summer activity, and that's about it.

A basketball, auto racing or even baseball (South American and Asian appeal) selection would be more appropriate IMNHO.

Lets consider international appeal...

4 billion football fans globally vs 500 million baseball fans....
Plus Football doesn't have a "World" Series that only American teams play in ;)

I thought he was kidding... but then I read it again and realized he probably doesn't even know that there's a world soccer tournament happening at this very moment.

Fair enough. Let's toss baseball, but do basketball or auto racing instead.

My point being is if you're going to rate a "best" sports game, do one that is played in all locations.

Yes, I'm well aware of the World Cup going on right now - hard not to with it plastered over every online sports page like ESPN and Sports Illustrated.

Should have known better than to say anything about soccer. Get my head torn off by the fans. ;)

Fifa 96 was a great fun game to play but PES and Winning Eleven take it out for me over fifa 98. The game play in the early PES games was outstanding and so much fun.

It's not about being a fan. Soccer (well, it's football) is the most popular sport in the world. That's a fact.

Lol, when it comes to global sports popularity America's choices are very much in the minority, not that it seems too many realise there is a world beyond.

About ten times as many people globally watch the World Cup Final versus the Super Bowl for example. The Super Bowl being the USA's biggest TV event by far of course. Also 98 percent of the Super Bowl's viewers are in North America. Nobody else really watches it. Whereas the WC final audience is vastly more diverse across the planet, truly a world cup.

Football is the biggest game in the world. It is in all places in the world. I don't get why you think it isn't.

I remember when FIFA 98 came out - I had been hooked on FIFA 96 and after the abomination that was FIFA 97, I was anxious to see what it would be... By the way, I suspect the reason 98 was so great was because EA needed it to be or else the series would have been cancelled - 97 truly was that bad!

After playing about 30 minutes, I concluded (as did almost everyone else) that it was the greatest game ever! But it had rain effects that only ran if you had a discrete video card - very rare at the time - as well as really needing 16mb of RAM - also crazy for the time!

It was because of this game that I built my first gaming rig from scratch.... P166, 16mb of RAM and more :)

While it may have dated graphics now, it's still the most fun game of the series to play, and has the best music :) Get busy child by The Crystal Method has been a staple on my iPod for 20years :)
