The iPhone 8 was the world's best-selling smartphone in May

Why it matters: Apple’s iPhone X might have popularized the notch among Android manufacturers, but the expensive flagship wasn't Cupertino’s most successful handset in May. That honor went to the cheaper iPhone 8, which according to new data from Counterpoint Research, beat its $1000 cousin and the Galaxy S9 Plus to become the world’s best-selling smartphone during the month.

Despite sales falling below expectations, Apple’s iPhone X had been the best-shipping smartphone over the holidays and Q1 2018, but was later surpassed by the iPhone 8.

The report shows that both the iPhone 8 and Samsung’s Galaxy S9 Plus accounted for 2.4 percent of the global smartphone sales market share in May, with Apple’s handset ever so slightly ahead. The iPhone X sat in third place with 2.3 percent, followed by Xiaomi’s Redmi 5A (2.2 percent) and the iPhone 8 Plus (2.1 percent).

Counterpoint Research says Apple's recent ‘How to shoot on iPhone’ promotional campaign in the run-up to the world cup helped push sales of the iPhone 8 in Europe and other markets.

Back in April, Counterpoint’s data placed both versions of the Galaxy S9 in the top two positions, followed by the iPhone X, 8 Plus, and 8. A month earlier, the iPhone X had held a huge lead.

The success is a very different story from the iPhone 8’s launch, which saw small turnouts and reports of the weakest sales figures of any iPhone in years. It seems that as the novelty of the notch and FaceID wore off, Apple fans preferred to save money by opting for the smaller-screen device, which has the same A11 Bionic processor and M11 co-processor as the iPhone 8 Plus and X.

Better stat would be, Apple, versus ALL android phones. There are THREE phone OS
platforms. Apple, Samsung & Android.
So a more fair analysis would be how well Apple, stacks up against Android, ALL
android phones.

I picked the iPhone 8 Plus over the X. Prefer the better battery and wider screen. Also it works with all the existing cases and accessories out there - including my Gamevice. Wasn’t exciting but it’s easily the best phone I’ve ever owned, I particularly like the camera and battery life.

Lol “fair analysis”. As if it’s a competition. If it is a competition then it would be a single company that could “win” the highest market share. Considering there are a multitude of companies competing against each other who ship Android phones it wouldn’t be a “win” for anyone to demonstrate that most phones shipped are using Android. I mean that would include blackberrys! And they aren’t “winning” at the moment at all.

Apple have consistently sold more devices than any other smartphone manufacturer for like a decade at this point.

These stats really amaze me. I do not know who buys these phones. From my experience, all I can say is that I do not know of a single person among my friends that would have any of these 750-1000$ phones so these stats must pull data from some kind of rich people markets. And considering that any phone, even the flagship will be obsolete after 3 years (Android) or at least will need a battery replacement (if possible), it makes little sense to splurge so much money. You will always be better off with a decent 400-500$ phone when that times come to replace your second 400-500$ phone will be much better with latest OS that the 3-year-old 800-1000$ flagship.
