The Nintendo Switch could be getting AMD FSR support

Something to look forward to: It appears that a least one upcoming game on the Nvidia-powered Nintendo Switch could be getting a boost to its image quality without sacrificing framerates thanks to AMD. Team red’s FidelityFX Super Resolution, aka FSR, was discovered in the user agreement for Nintendo Switch Sports, suggesting the game will support the upscaling tech.

Twitter users @NWPlayer123 (via VideoCardz) spotted the reference to FSR in the Nintendo game’s end-user license agreement (EULA). There isn’t any explanation as to how the tech might be used, though it’s speculated that it could be leveraged to improve the graphical quality/performance of games on the Switch’s 720p screen and when outputting to TVs at a 1080p resolution.

The Switch uses a Maxwell-based Tegra X1 SoC (256 CUDA cores) from Nvidia that was released in 2015, so it’s getting on a bit these days. It lacks the Tensor cores to support the company’s DLSS, and while Nvidia does have its Image Sharpening (NIS) tech, which, like FSR, is open-source, Nintendo has opted for AMD’s solution.

Before the Switch OLED model was released, there were plenty of rumors claiming it would be powered by an all-new Nvidia SoC that supported a DLSS-like technology, which would allow it to output at a 4K resolution when docked with a TV. Ultimately, though, it shipped with the same Tegra X1 SoC.

Whether Nintendo Switch Sports ships with FSR support or it is added at a later date (or at all) is unclear. We’ll find out for certain when the game launches on April 29.

The Switch isn’t the only handheld getting FSR support; it will also be available on the Steam Deck.

I've tested FSR Quality in games like God of War and Hellblade and it doesn't look bad at all - no match for DLSS but still better than going to a lower resolution. FSR Balanced is a bit too soft for me though.

I have an RX480 and it struggles, you’d think FSR would help me but so far I haven’t used it in any game it’s been in. It adds this strange jitter in motion that really disagrees with my eyes. I guess it’s a subjective thing. Hopefully the switch won’t get this although I rarely play in TV mode anyway.

I've ran FSR on HZD, but never experienced this jitter that you mentioned. Everything runs smoothly just as I was running HZD without FSR on a RTX 3000 series card.

In any case, having to fall back to FSR for a Nintendo Switch game only shows that the Switch is due for any upgrade in specs. It has been the market for a long time, and the hardware is definitely struggling in new titles, and that's been going on for some time. Nintendo has been making money for each console sold, and it is perplexing that they can't be bothered and just want to continue milking the same hardware.

The jitter is in every FSR title I’ve tried and reviewers have mentioned it too, digital foundry say its due to the lack of temporal mechanic to the tech. But they do say that it will only bother some people. Maybe it’s because I have a 27” 1080p monitor, it’s quite low res so you notice little bugs and things.

The switch is long overdue an upgrade. But I don’t really blame Nintendo for not releasing hardware in this climate.
