This real-time image warping projector is as awesome as it sounds

One of the inherent problems with overhead projects that I remember from high school is the fact that, unless everything is calibrated perfectly, you’re going to end up with a distorted image. What’s more, if the screen being projected onto isn’t perfectly still (think an open window or the AC blowing), you’re again going to experience distortion.

Researchers from the Ishikawa Watanabe Laboratory in Tokyo have come up with an incredibly impressive solution to the latter problem although their ambitions are probably a bit higher than high school classrooms.

What you’re seeing in the clip above is a technique called projection mapping which Gizmodo says is similar to how textures are applied to 3D models in video games. What makes this solution so impressive is that it can correct the projection in real-time to adapt to rapidly changing landscapes – even those with irregular surfaces.

One can imagine a future IMAX screen that can move and change for additional effects. Why not?
