    The US PC Gamer...

The US PC Gamer is bovine scatolagy because like 90% of all American standard media the people penning the words are so out of touch with the real world and the rest of the globe, that they can't see the light for their own sphinctors. Aside from the US PC Gamer only doing reports on games that pay them to do reports, they have a predetermand report for every game depending on the game companies past games. here in Canada we get both the US PC Gamer and the UK as well as the one from Japan, China and OZZY land converted to Einglish as well we have our own aside for our's (we will leve out because it is the most in touch with Canadians), the UK and CP Gamer from Japan have the best nutral look at the games giving facts that allow the consumer to choose their choice un like the Americian PC Gamer that reads as a long winded propaganda ad for the game.

As a consumer if I want an ad for something I will turn my TV on not pay for a magazine. If you like humor get the Ozzy land mag they allways add something funny to their reports yet keep it to the point; this is good this is bad and why... they allso edit kagaroos into their game screen shots alot and some of them are alittle disterbing sometimes. but I think that is from them living upsidedown and thier water spinning the wrong way. :bounce:

the original half life is, in my opinion, among the top 5 PC games ever made. it was a revolutionary step when it came out and the engine continues to drive games today.

The original Half Life was a modified Quake I engine. Quake was a revolutionary step in gaming, but don't dare misplace that honor and give it to Half Life. There may have been other things that Half Life was good for - but I never saw them. HL2 on the other hand...

    Far Cry.

You can leave it at that. Half-Life 2 is a game whose popularity mystifies me, I haven't even been able to finish it.

    varied ideas

:giddy: it is just amazing to see somany ideas that people have,
    just amazing.

the best games are ones that always hold a special place near ur heart, games that u can never forget, games that have that playing again and again value. for me RPG are games that do that and it varies from people, some of my frnds swear by their FPS and some by MORPG and so on.
    but for me
Star wars KOTOR is that special game.
i have played it apparently 28 times and still playing it occationally.

quake engine or not, half life is the platform which popular games such as opposing force and multiplayer games such as counter strike and day of defeat. it's a versatile bit of work, and i personally like it best. you could say it's more a matter of it's appeal to gamers and the widespread availability of popular mods than where the gaming engine originated.

y half life 2? there r much better games. Sure the graphics r g00d but its lacking in th3 fun department.

battlefield 1942 is another fine game. 64 players in a world war two battle scenario is a lot of fun.
  17. LNCPapa TS Special Forces Posts: 3,945   +120

I was just pointing out that the engine wasn't theirs - not that the game isn't fun (though I never understood why - I tried playing it several times and hated it.) I'm not ignorant of the fact that many, many people love(d) it so it has to have something I just don't get.

When you said it was a revolutionary step and that engine is still drives games today I felt that was misplaced. IMO Valve is a pretty crap company even though I was thoroughly impressed (technically) by HL2.

BTW - I also love BF1942 even though I haven't played it in a while.

Same here, Far Cry is my favorite single player for sure. I'm playing the new Splinter Cell now and it's pretty good. And Battlefield 1942/Desert Combat for online gaming is great.

    Nethack,

    Tomb Raider,

    The Longest Journey,

    Unreal Tournament,

    Grand Theft Auto 2.

The first one is free, the rest are a few bucks in bargain bins or secondhand.

Oh and LNCPapa, wasn't Half-Life engine based on Quake II engine, not the first Quake?
  20. LNCPapa TS Special Forces Posts: 3,945   +120

It's actually a bit of both engines - but mainly the Quake I engine.
