Toshiba unveils world's fastest SD cards for pro photographers

Toshiba is now advertising a new line of SD cards they claim will be the fastest in the world. Geared toward power users, the top-of-the-line Exceria Pro memory card offers write speeds up to 240MB/sec and will be available in multiple capacities.

Specifically, the Exceria Pro has a maximum transfer speed of 260MB/sec read and 240MB/sec write and will be available in capacities of 16GB and 32GB. Professionals that don’t require such fast write speeds may be interested in the original Exceria card as it dishes up read speeds of 260MB/sec with write speeds of 120MB/sec. It’ll be available in capacities of 32GB and 64GB, we’re told.

Toshiba said in a press release that these new cards are designed to offer users of high-end digital cameras an excellent experience. This means that photographers should be able to snap still images continuously without touching the in-camera buffer. This could be a huge boon for those into action / sports photography where snapping a series of images in rapid succession is desired.

The company was able to hit such high speeds thanks in part to the use of a newly developed controller that is compliant with UHS-II, the ultra high speed serial bus interface in SD memory card standard Ver4.10 that delivers data at 156MB/sec by single lane access and 312MB/sec by dual lane access.

Pricing for the new line wasn’t mentioned although we are told to expect the Exceria Pro cards in October followed by the regular Exceria line in November.

It is probably even faster than the internal storage on any smartphone today. It won't be long before smartphones start working as servers :)
 
Can I haz camera buffer big enough and fast enough to make use of all that throughput? I'd like to press down the shutter and go 10fps until I run out of space. kthnx.

I was thinking more along the lines of super computers.:p

That's not far from the truth. Smartphone processors today would held a spot against a 1990's top 500 Super Computers. Those older $12 Million dollar Cray-2 super computers would have been whooped by your iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy or HTC One!
