Trying to comprehend VNC, and get it working

Hi all

firstly, i may not be totally computer litterate, but im learning.

anyway, im trying to achieve my goal of being able to access my laptop at home form my iphone 4 remotely, i have installed realVNC personal edition and the corresponding app, which works fine using wifi, but whats the point of that, i need to be able to access via 3G.

im using a huawei EchoLife HG520b router from which i think i've forwarded the necesarry ports (i think), but i'm starting to get a bit bogged down now reading solutions regarding 'no-ip....com'.....

can anyone offer some helpful advice please?

lastly, upon opening realVNC viewer on the laptop, what should i put in the vnc server box?
