UK confirms social media ban for kids is coming – Meta, YouTube, and Snapchat respond

Social Media is a bully pulpit, and a gossip entity. None of them have any redeeming value. I wish the US would join this ban, and maybe some day ban UN-Social Media from the US altogether.
For sure, the days when it used to be a nice place to stay in touch and share photos with your family and friends are long gone.

You're not analyzing the situation fully. You withdraw a bill from the bank and give it to that mom-and-pop. They accept it then deposit it into another bank. Both ends are tracked, and connecting the two together to determine exactly how you spent that bill is trivial.

What are you going to buy with a roll of quarters? While in theory you can withdraw a large sum in coins, good luck finding a merchant who'll accept it ... and if they did, such transactions are so rare, they'd be even more easily tracked than one with paper currency.
I am. It's not guaranteed to be fully tracked (make change, use to buy other things, pay people, etc). No point setting up expansive bill tracking if it's not going to be as resilient as a digital option. Which is why eliminating physical currency would be the better (and more efficient) way to go if you wanted the best option.

Was that a joke?

Instead of invoking an evil maze of conspiracies, why not think about the situation sensibly? If you can think of a means to implement an accurate, universal system to verify age *without* a digital ID, please let the world know. Patent it first though: it'll make you a billionaire.

Unlikely, but certainly within the realm of possibility. But if you're worried about that, why not contact your local MP, and ensure the law is written specifically to bar that?

You are naive to think that they don't know your age. Public and private entities often had more than 400 facts on everyone 10 years ago. I would suppose that number is 4,000 facts, now. They can tell you things about yourself that you had forgotten. Everyone has a unique set of clicks that points to their identity. Age verification is pretty simple when you have enough info.

I love YouTube and it actually takes the place of cable in my house. I guess it is technically social media, but I see it used in 3 main ways. People making their own private news networks, documentaries/educational content and how-to videos.
Same. For all the more obscure interests you might have YouTube is a goldmine of like-minded people. I probably watch more YouTube than all other TV combined.

This has nothing to do with kids. If Kier Starmer cared about kids he'd root out grooming gangs and mass deport them. No, this is about him putting in digital ID by a backdoor and arresting people who spread news of what's happening to the British people at the hands of foreigners.
No it's not, what conspiracy-theorist nonsense. Sounds like the kind of line the Russian AI trolls are spewing onto every forum around the world in their attempt to turn them all into popuplist Idiocrasies like they have done in the States. There will be cage fights outside Downing St if the moronosphere have their way in the UK too.

I don't see any Russian propaganda, but daily I see Chinese propaganda attempting to get the Western world to surrender their lead in AI and datacenters. Much of it promulgated by weak-minded individuals on this very forum.

"Russian AI trolls spewing stuff onto every forum around the world in their attempt to turn them all into popuplist Idiocrasies like they have done in the States"?

Hmm. Sounds a bit conspiracy theoryish to me.

Wow you know you're on the wrong side of history when you get liked by Captain Argumentative himself.

At least the EU wants to do it semi right by having its own open source Id verification pipeline, I assume UK will allow whatever vendor to be used by the companies, so basically just American companies like Persona, which is a dangerous situation as one vendor ends up controlling access to it all, and if the verification is buggy once, it's buggy all the time.

This is the UK we're talking about, American companies are too expensive for something as unimportant as a citizen's personal data.

I’m sure it'll be offloaded to some dodgy companies elsewhere in the world who somehow own a piece of Canary Wharf and we know nothing about them.

What a bunch of hypocrites. What exactly has the UK government been doing about the (proven) Asian grooming gangs operating in various UK cities for the last decade or two? Answer/ Sweet FA............Too afraid of being called racist. Pathetic.

You're a master of overlapping logical fallacies, an incredible feat of broken reasoning in your post.

1. Red herring
2. Whataboutism
3. False dilemma
4. Mind‑reading / motive
5. Conspiracy‑style reasoning
6. Slippery slope
7. Hasty generalization
8. Straw‑man
9. Appeal to emotion

As it stands that's decided by the companies themselves. For example, both Reddit and OpenAI are using Persona, an American company, to verify the IDs of UK users, hence why I mentioned it.

I was being sarcastic, the decisions the UK has made in recent decades, they don't care about anything.

you don't own a little red hat by any chance do you?🙄🤣

I'm quite confident you own a black Antifa mask ... and a brown Sturmabteilung shirt.
I've never seen a black antifa mask. in fact I've never seen any antifa masks. have you? could you throw up an image of one for everyone's edumacation? I do however own a brown t-shirt. keep licking the windows.

I don't see anyone wearing masks with antifa on them attacking an old woman. I see the old woman, & the person berating her for not wearing a mask, have paint on them so you've still got to upload your claim of an "antifa" mask. it looks like the protest was during covid 19 lockdown? if so, she should have been wearing a mask like all normal, law abiding citizens would have done. lastly, the video is from turning point usa. this is not a credible news source. strike 1.

journalist Andy Ngo? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Ngo. it seems he's a right wing nut job so he's not a reliable source & as this clip is from foxnews it is completely laughable that you think this a credible source. strike 2.

the woman in a wheelchair assaulted by antifa? a clip from the entertainment network foxnews. again, completely laughable & not a credible source. strike 3.

antifa cells indicted in Prairieland shooting? this is from trump's injustice department & the way the orange pos lies constantly his injustice department is not a credible source. strike 4.

try harder but this time use credible news sources & not those that push their right wing nutjob views. also when are you going to upload a picture of an antifa mask you keep banging on about?
