I installed an external drive and successfully copied data to it, but I can not make it boot. Also, the BIOS does not recognize the new drive. Do I need a special driver for thre external? Or is this a motherboard issue?

If your motherboard (bios) is not able to boot off of a usb device then it won't whether it's a hard drive or a flash drive. The bios won't see it. The drive will only show up as an external usb device.
