Unable to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 KB976932

History: Dell Inspiron computer originally had Windows XP installed. Installed Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade. One year later unable to install Service Pack 1. Error code: 8007371B. Also unable to install Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 (KB973688). Symtoms are sluggish internet, freezing programs, unable to use internet links.

The actual fault code seems to mean ERROR_SXS_TRANSACTION_CLOSURE_INCOMPLETE whatever they mean by that. Possibly something went wrong on the original update from XP (always likely with a cross-platform update from MS). The system readiness tool seems to work for some people.

First off, make sure nothing unusual (and certainly any anti-malware you may have) is NOT running when you attempt the update. Run a clean system update in other words. You should be disconnected from the internet when you do this, of course.

The only other things (unlikely in reality) is that the languages built into the SP does not include the one you have already installed on your system. And does there exist plenty of space on the HDD (expect an SP update to require anything up to another 15Gb during install).
